Gaon ho ya shehar โ peepal ke ped ke neeche chabutara, dhaaga bandhe log aur deepak ki lau โ ye drishya poore Bharat mein ek jaisa hai. Aakhir ek ped ko itna samman kyun?
Gita mein jiska naam aaya
Peepal ko sanskrit mein ashvattha kaha gaya hai, aur iski mahima swayam Bhagavad Gita mein aayi hai โ jahan shri Krishna kehte hain ki vrikshon mein main ashvattha hoon.
Amavasya par peepal ke neeche deepdaan pitru-shanti ke liye vishesh mana gaya hai.
Vigyan kya kehta hai
Ye vriksh vigyan ki drishti se bhi asadharan hai โ peepal un vrikshon mein hai jo raat mein bhi pranvayu dete hain, aur iski chhaya ghani hoti hai. Hamare purvajon ne shayad isi liye ise puja se jod diya โ jis vriksh ko devta maana jaayega, use koi kaatega nahi. Ye parampara asal mein paryavaran-raksha ka sabse purana abhiyan hai.
Ek saral niyam
Ravivar ko peepal par jal nahi diya jaata โ baaki dinon mein subah jal arpit karna shubh mana gaya hai. Aur sabse sundar seva โ ek naya peepal lagana. Shastra kehte hain ki vriksh lagane wale ko us vriksh ki chhaya mein baithne wale har praani ka punya milta hai.
Village or city, the scene is the same across India โ a platform under a peepal tree, sacred threads tied around its trunk, a lamp glowing at its roots. Why does one tree command such reverence?
The tree named in the Gita
In Sanskrit the peepal is called ashvattha, and its glory is proclaimed in the Bhagavad Gita itself, where Shri Krishna says โ among trees, I am the ashvattha. This gave the peepal its status as the divine tree. Tradition holds that the trinity โ Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh โ reside in it, which is why circling a peepal is considered equal to circling all the gods.
Saturday and the peepal
Tradition prescribes lighting a mustard-oil lamp under the peepal on Saturdays and performing parikrama. This is believed to calm afflictions attributed to Shani and invoke the blessings of ancestors. On Amavasya, offering a lamp under the peepal is considered especially meaningful for ancestral peace.
What science observes
The tree is remarkable in scientific terms too โ the peepal is among the trees known to release oxygen even at night, and its canopy is generous. Perhaps that is precisely why our ancestors tied it to worship: a tree regarded as a deity would never be cut down. This tradition is, in truth, the oldest environmental-protection campaign.
One simple rule
Water is not offered to the peepal on Sundays; on other days, a morning offering of water is considered auspicious. And the most beautiful seva of all โ planting a new peepal. The scriptures say the one who plants a tree earns the merit of every being that ever rests in its shade.
