Ek baar Ganesh ji apne priya bhog modak ka anand lekar mushak par sawar ho kar chale ja rahe the. Raat ka samay tha. Maarg mein mushak ke saamne ek sarp aa gaya — mushak ghabra kar uchhal pada aur Ganesh ji ka santulan bigad gaya.
Chandrama ki hansi
Aakash se ye drishya dekh rahe Chandrama ko apne roop aur chamak ka bada garv tha. Ganesh ji ko is tarah girte dekh wo apni hansi rok na sake — thattha karte hue has pade. Ganesh ji ne upar dekha. Unki aankhon mein krodh nahi, ek gehri shiksha thi. Unhone kaha — Chandra dev, tumhe apni sundarta ka ahankar ho gaya hai. Jo doosron ke girne par hansta hai, uska apna tej ek din avashya ghatata hai. Aaj se jo tumhe dekhega, us par mithya kalank lagega.
Chandrama ka pashchatap
Shraap sunte hi Chandrama ka saara garv pighal gaya. Ganesh ji to karuna ke sagar hain — bole, shraap poora lauta nahi sakta, par itna kar sakta hoon: varsh mein keval Ganesh Chaturthi ki raat tumhe dekhne wale par kalank ka bhay rahega, shesh dinon mein nahi.
Ye katha bachchon ko sunane layak sabse sundar kathaon mein hai — kyunki iska paath saaf hai: kisi ke girne par hansna apne hi tej ko ghatana hai. Aur Ganesh ji ka nyay bhi dekhiye — shraap mein bhi karuna ka dwar khula rakha. Vighnaharta wahi hai jo dand mein bhi sudhaar ka raasta de.
One night, Ganesh ji was riding home on his little mouse, delighted after a feast of his favourite modaks. On the way, a snake crossed their path — the startled mouse leapt, and Ganesh ji lost his balance.
The Moon laughs
Watching from the sky was Chandrama, the Moon, who was famously proud of his beauty and glow. Seeing Ganesh ji tumble, he could not contain himself — he burst into mocking laughter. Ganesh ji looked up. In his eyes there was no rage, only a deep lesson. He said — Chandra dev, your beauty has turned into arrogance. One who laughs at another's fall must one day watch his own radiance fade. From today, whoever looks upon you shall suffer false blame.
The Moon's remorse
The curse dissolved all of the Moon's pride instantly. He begged forgiveness; the gods pleaded too. And Ganesh ji, an ocean of compassion, relented — the curse cannot be fully withdrawn, he said, but I will soften it: only on the night of Ganesh Chaturthi will seeing you bring the fear of false blame; on all other nights, none. And your glow shall now wax and wane — so that you always remember that beauty is never permanent.
It is said that from that day the Moon began its phases, and the tradition of not looking at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi night was born.
The essence
This is among the most beautiful stories to tell children, for its lesson is crystal clear: laughing at someone's fall dims your own light. And notice Ganesh ji's justice — even within the curse, he left a door open for redemption. The true remover of obstacles is the one whose punishment itself carries a path to reform.
